10 Tips on Asking For What You Want & Letting Go To Get It…

- Self Care For The re-emerging/re-inventing herself woman

Asking for an answer to a problem, or asking for what I want, has been something I do regularly but what I do that I believe puts a kink in the energy flow hose, is that no sooner do I ask I, my ego/mind, is plotting my answer and the appropriate action.  In the past, trust, time, or space has not been given for the answers to bubble up from within.

While wandering in the bookstore recently I was drawn once again to read a  ”Spiritual Solution to Every Problem” by Wayne Dyer. I have picked this up and put it down more often than I can remember.  I  read a passage from the book from Benjamin Hoff’s The Tao of Pooh that served as one of those touch-points for my soul.

“The masters of life know the Way.  They listen to the voice within them, the voice of wisdom and simplicity, the voice that reasons beyond cleverness and knows beyond knowledge…”

It dawned on me that I haven’t been giving attention to the listening phase;  I went immediately from asking to doing.  A good friend of mine recently went through a major life transition and found himself plopped in the middle of nothing but spaciousness.  He retired after 30 years of “doing” and has no idea what, if anything, to do/be next. His mind is just longing to attach itself to something and has decided that “fear” would be great.  He is being reminded to just be with the spaciousness and notice the minds desire to attach.  He is needing to just listen to the open unknowing  of his life.

On the other hand my mind must be thrilled because I, daily, am giving it a constant fuel for attachment.  The only problem is I am, so often, spinning my wheels and grasping that nothing gets done or feels effortlessly inspired. I decided to identify 10 things I could not do -do to bring myself back to that spacious listening and inspired action.

1) Unplug frequently, if not daily, for an evening or morning, from my habitual playground on the internet. Yes, this includes all social networking.  Everything will be okay when I do this, if not better.

2)Schedule time for spiritual connection (what works for me not what  a how-to book says). I used to resist scheduling something like this. It seemed counter to the act itself.  Yet, with our busy lives and for myself, launching a new career, I have to schedule my spiritual plug-in just like I would the time to exercise or any other self-care ritual.

3)Be willing to ask and ask for what you want – not what you don’t want. Asking for what you want rather than what you don’t want will, according to Dr. Dyer and others, amp up the universe response engines in the direction that you truly want.

4)Ask questions and notice the thoughts that arise. Remember that you are the awareness of the thoughts not the thoughts themselves.

5)Have a passion for what you ask for and a commitment to responding when the answers/inspiration surfaces.

6)Purposefully wait one full day (if not more) before I take any action on the question asked. Unless of course it is truly “it” the answer, and you need to respond immediately.  I will leave that up to you.

7)After asking the question connect with nature, your own dance, cooking or whatever keeps you in tune with the  energy of positivity.

(8) Take time to notice synchronicity and magic happenings.  Those are often the inspired, revealing answers.

9) Ask someone who has passed over, a mentor, guide,  or beloved inspiring family member and see what answers show-up.

10) Most Importantly – Let It Go – and get into enjoying your day exactly as it is. Notice the you that is attached to getting a result.

Do you ask for what you want? If so, what has your experience been?

What if you were to practice even a few of these tips how would this impact your day/life?

  1. I have recently been finding joy and insight in applying these tips. This blog posting came from an inspired question / connection session that I had. Often I will ask before I go to bed and in the morning as I busy myself an insight or intuition will show up and I will respond.

  2. i think the immediate jump to trying to “do” and find the right road to that solution is that inner voice insisting that we need to “take control” of our lives, don’t just sit around waiting for good things to come to you, take the reigns you slacker!! (this is rooted in the American psyche, the ol’ bootstraps theory). of course, there is something to be said for participating in your own life, but sometimes we’re so busy participating that it doesn’t leave any room for the universe to participate as well, by presenting things you never could have expected or planned. ironically sometimes those are the best things of all. so it’s that eternal tug-o-war between control and trust. i guess it’s finding a balance between the two, but it’s hard to know where the line is.

    • Thanks for your reply Suz. So true, the “boot-strap” mentality is pervasive. I have found the awareness practice to be very helpful in simply noticing the thought “take control” rather than responding to it. Also, the balance thing, not going to happen ever. It’s going to always be an up down up down sort of relationship. For me, it’s about coming home to what I know (one of the tips up above) or whatever it is that brings me back to center. Over time I don’t get as lost in the murky water, I find the shore line a little faster.
