Happy All Hallows Eve, Samhain, Halloween and any other name attributed to this most auspicious and becoming a not so trivialized holiday.
Halloween, if you explore the history of Halloween, you can see its connection to ancient pagan rituals. I’m talking down to the colors of the festival, the pumpkin, trick-or-treating, etc. It’s also one of the only holidays we truly give full attention to the “Eve” of the event and not the day after. In, fact it took me till this Halloween to realize that November 1 is the day after All Hollow’s Eve and is celebrated, granted to a lesser degree than its sister “Eve”.
What I love about this time of year in particular is how we consciously or unconsciously remove our masks by putting on a mask. When we don a mask, or a costume, we get to experience, if only for a few hours, a release (to some degree) of control, acceptance and security. Even if we choose a costume that feels safe to us, we risk stepping out of the ordinary. When we get set free from our Zombie like life we actually get a glimpse into our genuine selves.
So even if you are not going out tonight, practice doing something out of the ordinary. Put on that costume that evokes the energy you are creating in your life, it could be a wench, a sailor, a chef, it could be a guardian, discoverer, reader, lover whatever it is you choose – and notice when you start to uncomfortable, ask yourself is this discomfort stemming from a wanting of control, acceptance, or security and just like dropping a pencil from your hand you can choose to let it go.
Have a sweet, wonderful, genuine All Hollows Eve.
